Winter Fishing in Baffin Bay: What to Expect

With water temperatures dropping to typical December levels, the winter fishing cycle on Baffin Bay is gearing up. However, this week brought an unexpected twist as the water levels rose again after last week’s much-needed drop. The deeper water has made it challenging to access some of the prime fishing spots fish favor during cold snaps.

I don’t expect the extra water to stick around for long, so plan your trips strategically. Fishing just before a front or two to three days after tends to yield the best results.

In Baffin Bay, fish typically hold close to the bottom during winter, so it’s essential to work your lure thoughtfully—keeping it “low and slow.” This technique is especially effective when water temperatures dip below 60°F.

For lures, I recommend soft plastics, such as straight tails and larger paddle tails, as well as Softdine XL’s and Corky Fat Boys. These options are tried and true for winter fishing in Baffin’s unique waters.

Hope to see you on the water soon!
